OUR STORY

Sustainable Comfort is not just the name of our company — it is a concept we work to define each and every single day.

In 2014, Albert LaValley and James Moriarty left Comfort Systems USA to start a new firm. "We had little more than three laptops and a 2004 Toyota Tundra. At the time we joked about calling the company “Three guys and a Truck” – I am glad we didn’t – and our primary concern was whether our clients would still want to work with us. So we went on a road trip to meet with them all in person, in the Toyota, which earned the nickname “The Jalopy” when it started shaking at any speed over 71 mph. Our clients at the time were universally supportive, a kindness for which I remain deeply grateful. In particular, I can remember one client, who had left a job years before to go out on her own, telling me, “Running a company is an emotional roller coaster. When you have a good day, it’s amazing, and when things don’t go well it will feel like the end of the world. You had better be ready.”

Nine years later, the company has grown to 50 people (and many vehicles, though the Jalopy still purrs like a kitten when we fire it up for yet another run to the lumber yard). And, of course, that client was right – it has been a wild ride. But that isn’t really what I think about when I think about the last nine years.

I think about the meetings we have sat in, the projects we have discussed, the issues we have debated. Things don’t always go perfectly, but I am in wonder of the progress we have made together. That collaboration, getting to know our employees and our clients, and doing interesting work together – that is what has made this so much fun."

Our Mission

We work to create thoughtful, sustainable, impactful buildings.

Our Vision

As buildings change over the course of their life, their effect on people, the environment, and the community changes too. We have set up a company that understands this evolution and how to make an impact at every turn, from design, construction, and renovation through everyday building operations. With each touchpoint, we strive for a more sustainable future for the building and the community that surrounds it.

Guiding Principles

In the whirlwind of daily life, it is easy to lose sight of the big picture. We allow these four principles to anchor our professional lives:

  • SHOW UP: Do what you say you will do. Be present. Face-to-face commitments build relationships; failure to deliver on commitments undoes them. Take time to disconnect. Spend time with your colleagues. Get excited. Be the person everyone wants on their team.

  • SENSE OF URGENCY: Get tasks done, done. Don’t let them linger at 80%. Return phone calls and emails faster than expected. Understand how your work impacts others. Recognize that a deliverable that arrives early reduces a client's or coworkers’ stress. Think through your priorities. Be relentless. Fight procrastination.

  • BE CURIOUS: Be open and humble. Ask questions. Read. Contemplate problems. Start interesting conversations with our clients, your colleagues, and the person next to you on public transit. Curious people thrive in our business. Think critically.

  • NEVER LET THEM SEE YOU SWEAT: Pressure makes diamonds, but let’s be honest; no one cares how diamonds are made. Everyone is busy and stressed – the best make it look easy.
