Job description

Sustainable Comfort, Inc. (SCI) is a green building and energy efficiency consulting firm specializing in multifamily housing. Our mission is to create better buildings through sustainability, innovation, and collaboration. By working with developers and construction teams across the Northeast Region, we help bring high-performance, energy-efficient buildings to life.

As a company, we value ambition, teamwork, and the drive to make a meaningful impact. SCI offers a forward-thinking culture with opportunities for professional growth, leadership development, and creative problem-solving.

Position Overview

The Energy Rater plays a key role in the design and certification of high-performance multifamily buildings by conducting HERS energy modeling, reviewing construction documents, and providing technical recommendations throughout the design process. Working closely with architects, developers, and project teams, this position helps optimize building performance and ensure compliance with ENERGY STAR, LEED, Enterprise Green Communities, Passive House, and other green building programs.

The ideal candidate is motivated, detail-oriented, and eager to grow professionally in the green building industry. This is an opportunity to work on innovative projects, develop your technical expertise, and make a lasting impact on building sustainability.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work with green building programs such as Energy Star, LEED for Homes, Enterprise Green Communities, and Passive House.

  • Communicate program guidelines, requirements, and desired outcomes to clients and contractors.

  • Conduct energy assessments and perform energy modeling using HERS (Home Energy Rating System) protocols and tools to estimate energy use, guide decision making, and issue certifications.

  • Work with architects and developers to develop building plans with an eye for sustainability to meet various energy efficiency and green building programs.

  • Analyze data and provide recommendations for energy efficiency improvements.

Role Expectations

  • The Energy Rater is expected to be a proactive contributor to the success of multifamily projects by delivering accurate energy models, thorough design reviews, and technical guidance throughout the design and certification process. This role plays a key part in helping project teams achieve energy efficiency and green building certification goals while ensuring compliance with program requirements.

  • Key expectations include producing accurate and timely energy models and plan reviews, communicating effectively with architects, developers, and project teams, maintaining a high level of technical quality, and identifying opportunities to improve building performance through practical, cost-effective solutions.

  • Success in this role means delivering reliable technical work, building strong collaborative relationships with clients and colleagues, continuously expanding your knowledge of building science and energy modeling, and contributing to SCI’s mission of creating high-performing, sustainable buildings.

Job requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required. Trade school education, an Associate degree, or relevant certifications are preferred but not required.

  • At least 2 years of experience in construction, energy efficiency, or a related field.

  • Familiarity with HERS ratings, ENERGY STAR certifications, or other green building programs is preferred.

  • Valid U.S. driver’s license with a clean driving record.

  • Authorization to work in the United States.

What We Offer

  • Competitive Pay: $48,000-65,000 salary range, with opportunities for bonuses.

  • Generous Benefits:

    • 6% 401(k) match.

    • Health insurance reimbursement.

    • Unlimited paid time off.

  • Access to a company car for site visits.

  • Professional Growth: Ongoing training, certifications, and career advancement opportunities.

  • Work-Life Balance: A flexible, supportive environment where you can thrive personally and professionally.
